A delightful
quiet 1 bedroom first floor self catering holiday flat with beautiful
views.
The owners, Alastair a retired solicitor and Mary a spare time
potter, live in the next house up the lane. They use the
ground floor of the cottage as a pottery and when they have the
time they make a few pots!
The cottage is set in a peaceful wooded valley in the Exmoor
National Park, about a mile from the village of Brompton Regis.

Hiccombe House
Cottage self catering holiday flat occupies the whole first floor of an old stone-built cottage facing south
down a sheltered and secluded oak-wooded valley on the south eastern
edge of the Exmoor National Park in Somerset.
The cottage
has a small south facing garden with furniture. The views
and the peace are quite special.
Off-road parking for one car is available opposite to the cottage. |
 |

The accommodation
features a double bedroom with wash basin, a lounge with electric fire,
colour TV and southerly views, bathroom with bath and toilet,
kitchen/diner (also with super views down the valley). The kitchen has a
fridge (with freezer compartment), microwave, electric cooker, toaster
etc.

This is perfect
walking country where walkers can chose between the lush rolling
countryside of West Somerset, the high heather covered moorland of
Exmoor with its ancient oak wooded combes or the spectacular coastline
to the north which features some of the highest cliffs in England.
Exmoor's famous wild ponies and herds of wild Red Deer are sure to be
seen during your stay if you venture across the moorland on foot or by
car.
There are many interesting walks starting from the cottage; The
Haddeo Valley, The Haddon Hills and Wimbleball lake are all
within a mile or two.
|
| |
|
About
a mile to the east is Wimbleball Lake, a large mature reservoir which
features some lovely walks, yachting and excellent fishing. This is a
popular place for picnics.
The prehistoric Tarr
Steps - an ancient clapper bridge across the River Barle - is only a few
miles away and well worth a visit. Tarr Farm Restaurant
overlooking the bridge will serve you a very nice cream tea any
afternoon (or a very nice evening candlelit dinner). Another
good spot for a cream tea is Selworthy Green, between Porlock
and Minehead. The picture-postcard thatched cottages are well
worth seeing and the tea rooms have won many prestigious awards. |

A few miles to the
north of us is the picturesque village of Dunster with its ancient Yarn Market
and National Trust Castle. The High Street has a number of excellent tea
rooms and interesting shops. There is also a visitor centre.
Dunster has a station on the West Somerset Railway - steam hauled trains
along a 20 mile single track line between Taunton and Minehead.
The scenery along the way is superb and well worth a day out.
There are a number
of other National Trust properties and Gardens nearby including
Knightshayes Court, Watersmeet, Arlington Court, Killerton House, The
Heddon Valley and Lundy Island. (Full details available from the NT
website).

An hours
spectacular drive to the north west is the Brendon Valley - made
famous in R.D.Blackmoore's novel Lorna Doone. This photo
was taken from County Gate on the A39 coast road. A few
miles further west are the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth
(known as Little Switzerland by the Victorians). This area
is well worth a days visit. The walk up the East Lyn
valley to Watersmeet is beautiful at any time of year and the
walks up Hollerday Hill above Lynton are rewarded by some
breathtaking views along the Coast and across the Bristol
Channel to South Wales. |

The village of Brompton
Regis is just over a mile up the lane. Here you will find the lovely old church and a fine pub called the George
Inn. Good food is
available here most days. They keep some good local real
ales including Cotleigh and Exmoor Ales.
The larger village of Dulverton
is just 5 miles away. Here there is a late-opening supermarket, bank (NatWest),
Post Office, doctor, dentist, chemist, various interesting shops, tea rooms,
pubs, public library and an Exmoor National Park Visitor Centre.
